Walter Sage fonds. 1855-1980, predominant 1976-1980.

The fonds consists of personal correspondence (1902-1963), copies of articles, reviews and addresses (typed and handwritten drafts), subject files and lecture and research notes. There is a limited amount of material about the University of British Columbia Department of History for the period 1921-1935. The fonds also includes records from organizations with which Sage was involved, including Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (1943-1959), Canadian Social Science Research Council (1942-1945), Canadian Institute of International Affairs (1937-1950), Canadian Historical Association (1932-1961), British Columbia Historical Association (1925-1963) and the Royal Society of Canada (1941-1961). There is also an assortment of records from other family members, most notably Nelda Sage (wife) and Jessica Sage (mother). Fonds includes photographs of the Peace River region, including the Dunvegan area.

Born in London, Ontario, Walter Sage was educated at the University of Toronto (B.A., 1910) and Oxford University where he obtained his M.A. in history (1916). He later earned a Ph.D. from Toronto (1925). His first teaching position was at Calgary College in 1913 as a lecturer in history. After teaching there for two years, he went to Queen's University.
